What is a therapeutic massage and why is it my go-to modality?
When you classify a session as therapeutic massage it gives the practitioner and client the ability to tailor every moment of every session to the client’s current needs. In my experience when massage therapy is performed in a healthy clinical setting as opposed to a spa setting the practitioner generally is trusted and given the freedom to find out what needs to be done in each session to maximize the client’s healing in that time.
Whereas in a spa setting you usually have to choose what style of massage you prefer. And each one comes with a price difference. For instance, a Swedish or relaxation massage is generally less expensive than Deep Tissue, Myofascial release, or Trigger Point therapy. Aromatherapy and essential oil application and heat or cold therapies are additional add-ons as well.
However, when I classify my sessions as ‘therapeutic massage” and charge only for the time frame that we work together. We have the freedom to find what pressure each area needs for healing and follow your needs.
Spa versus Holistic Settings
In a spa once you pay for Swedish there likely won’t be any deep work or trigger point therapy because the session has been classified as a relaxation session. Which is fine! But why not have the freedom to work out a deep adhesion that will leave you with less pain and more freedom of movement? During our therapeutic massage sessions together we can always do both. As a massage therapist, I find that it’s optimal to work the areas that need it deeply while also letting you unwind and relax.
For example, during a full-body therapeutic massage session, it isn’t uncommon to use deeper pressure on the back and shoulders (common areas of tension). There might even be some deep scar tissue therapy if needed. Yet the scalp and feet are often neglected and they lead to deep relaxation when treated. In my opinion, having an approach tailored to your wants and needs along with a level of comfort during each session maximizes your body’s healing. Why pay for “deep tissue” and feel beat up after because it was actually too much for that session? In each therapeutic massage session, we have the freedom to follow the body’s cues and work within those boundaries.
In a holistic setting, we also have the freedom to play with aromatherapy and topical treatments that help with inflammation without worrying about “add-ons” in pricing. Before each therapeutic massage session, we can talk about what is needed and expected during any session and then work together to meet those goals with any modalities that will help achieve the proper level of healing and relaxation for each session.
