Functional Medicine in Orland Park: Discover a Better Path to Health

Have you ever been told that your lab work looks “normal,” yet you still don’t feel like yourself?

Maybe you’re tired all the time, struggling with brain fog, gaining weight despite your best efforts, dealing with digestive issues, or wondering why your hormones suddenly seem completely out of balance. You may have seen several doctors, tried different medications, changed your diet, or simply learned to live with symptoms that never seem to fully go away.

This is often where functional medicine offers a different way of looking at your health.

Rather than focusing only on a diagnosis or individual symptom, functional medicine asks a bigger question: Why is this happening in the first place?

At Anchored In Health in Orland Park, we use a functional medicine approach to help patients better understand what may be contributing to their symptoms and what their body may need to function more effectively. We don’t just focus on what’s going wrong, but also on what’s going well with your health.

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered approach that looks at how different systems of the body work together.

Your hormones, digestive system, thyroid, immune system, blood sugar, stress response, nutritional status, and inflammation do not operate independently. A problem in one area can influence several others.

For example, chronic stress may affect cortisol and blood sugar regulation. Poor digestive function can interfere with nutrient absorption. Insulin resistance may contribute to inflammation, fatigue, weight gain, and hormone changes.

Instead of looking at each symptom as a separate problem, functional medicine looks for patterns and connections.

The goal is not simply to ask, “What can we do about this symptom?”

We also want to ask: What could be contributing to this symptom?

That small change in perspective can open the door to a much more comprehensive view of your health.

Why Are More People Looking for Functional Medicine in Orland Park?

Life in Orland Park and the surrounding Chicago suburbs can be busy. Between work, commuting, raising a family, caring for aging parents, managing a household, and trying to fit in exercise and healthy meals, taking care of yourself can quickly move to the bottom of the list.

Over time, chronic stress, poor sleep, inconsistent nutrition, lack of movement, environmental exposures, hormone changes, and other factors can begin to affect how you feel.

Many of the patients who come into my office aren’t necessarily dealing with one isolated problem. Instead, they may have several symptoms that seem unrelated.

Some common concerns include:

  • Chronic fatigue or low energy
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
  • Digestive problems, bloating, or irregular bowel movements
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Blood sugar or insulin resistance concerns
  • Thyroid symptoms
  • Hormonal changes during perimenopause or menopause
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Headaches
  • Joint or muscle discomfort
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or “wired but tired”

Sometimes routine testing provides an obvious explanation. Other times, patients are told everything looks fine even though they know they don’t feel fine.

Functional medicine allows us to look deeper.

Looking Beyond “Normal” Lab Results

One of the most common things I hear from new patients is:

“My doctor said my labs were normal, but I still don’t feel good.”

Normal lab results are certainly reassuring in many situations, but they don’t always explain why someone is experiencing symptoms.

Laboratory reference ranges are primarily designed to identify values outside the expected range for a tested population. Functional medicine may also look at patterns among multiple results and consider how those findings relate to the patient’s symptoms, health history, diet, lifestyle, medications, and other factors.

For example, instead of looking at glucose alone, we may also consider fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1c, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and other metabolic markers.

For thyroid concerns, looking only at TSH may not always provide the entire picture. Depending on the individual, additional testing may include Total T4, Total T3, Free T4, Free T3, thyroid antibodies, and other markers.

The same is true for nutrients, hormones, inflammation, digestive health, and cardiovascular risk.

One laboratory value rarely tells the entire story. For more on this topic check out our post “Why Your Labs Are Normal But You Still Feel Terrible: A Functional Medicine Perspective”.

Finding the Root Cause of Chronic Symptoms

The phrase “root cause” is used frequently in functional medicine, but what does it actually mean?

It means recognizing that the same symptom can have very different contributing factors in different people.

Take fatigue as an example.

Fatigue may be associated with:

  • Iron deficiency
  • Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Blood sugar dysregulation
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic stress
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive dysfunction and poor nutrient absorption
  • Inflammation
  • Inadequate protein or calorie intake

Simply trying to increase energy without understanding why someone is tired may miss an important piece of the puzzle.

Functional medicine is about investigating those pieces and determining how they may fit together.

Your Gut Health Can Affect More Than Digestion

Digestive health is an important part of functional medicine because the gastrointestinal system does much more than digest food.

The gut plays a role in nutrient absorption, immune function, inflammation, and communication with the nervous system.

When digestive function isn’t optimal, symptoms may extend beyond gas, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea.

Depending on the individual, we may evaluate factors such as digestion, nutrient status, food reactions, intestinal inflammation, microbiome balance, parasites and infections, or other gastrointestinal concerns.

Supporting digestive health can therefore be an important part of a broader functional medicine plan.

Hormones, Stress, and Metabolism Are Connected

Another area where there are overlapping symptoms is the relationship between hormones, stress, thyroid function, and blood sugar regulation.

This becomes particularly important for women during perimenopause and menopause.

Changes in estrogen and progesterone may occur at the same time that sleep becomes more difficult, stress increases, body composition changes, and insulin sensitivity begins to shift.

Looking at hormones without considering thyroid function, cortisol, nutrition, sleep, and metabolic health may provide only part of the picture.

Functional medicine allows us to look at these systems together rather than treating each concern as if it exists in isolation.

Functional Medicine Is Personalized Medicine

There is no single “functional medicine diet,” supplement program, or laboratory panel that is appropriate for everyone.

Two people can walk into my Orland Park office with the exact same complaint and have very different reasons for experiencing it.

That’s why the process starts with listening.

It’s important to understand your health history, symptoms, diet, stress, sleep, medications, supplements, previous testing, and what has changed over time.

From there, we can determine which areas deserve a closer look and whether additional testing may be appropriate.

Depending on the individual, this may include evaluation of:

  • Blood sugar and insulin
  • Thyroid function
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Iron status
  • Inflammation
  • Cardiovascular markers
  • Hormones
  • Adrenal and stress-response patterns
  • Digestive function
  • Food sensitivities or immune reactions
  • Environmental exposures
  • Genetics

Testing should have a purpose. More testing isn’t always better testing. The goal is to gather information that can help us better understand your individual health picture.

A Different Approach to Your Health

Functional medicine isn’t about replacing conventional medicine.

There are times when medication, imaging, surgery, emergency care, or specialty medical treatment is absolutely necessary. Functional medicine can work alongside appropriate conventional care by looking at lifestyle, nutrition, metabolic health, and other factors that may influence overall wellness.

I often describe health using the Triad of Health: structure, biochemistry, and emotional well-being. When one side of that triangle is struggling, it will affect the other sides.

This is one reason my approach at Anchored In Health combines my background in chiropractic care with functional medicine. Instead of viewing the body as a collection of separate parts, I look at how those pieces may be interacting.

Functional Medicine in Orland Park: Is It Right for You?

You don’t necessarily need a complicated diagnosis to benefit from taking a closer look at your health.

Functional medicine may be worth exploring if:

  • You have persistent symptoms without a clear explanation.
  • You’ve been told your labs are normal but still don’t feel well.
  • You have several symptoms that seem unrelated.
  • You want to better understand your metabolic, hormonal, digestive, or nutritional health.
  • You want a more individualized approach to nutrition and lifestyle.
  • You are looking for someone who will take the time to look at the bigger picture.

Most importantly, you should feel heard and involved in decisions about your health.
